Charles Louis Strouse (born June 7, 1928 in New York City , New York ) is an American composer and songwriter .

life and work

Charles Strouse was born to Ethel (nee Newman) and Ira Strouse and grew up in New York City . He graduated from the Eastman School of Music . Strouse and his wife, director and choreographer Barbara Siman, have four children together: Benjamin, Nicholas, Victoria and William.

He composed numerous musicals and wrote the music for several films. In addition to numerous nominations, he also won three Tony Awards : 1961 for Bye Bye Birdie , 1970 for Applause and 1977 for Annie .
