It's a Bird… It's a Plane… It's Superman is an American musical based on the Superman comics and characters by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster .

Charles Strouse wrote the music with texts by Lee Adams and a book by David Newman and Robert Benton .

After its premiere on Broadway in 1966 and a television version from 1975, the musical experienced new popularity from 2010. The German-language premiere took place in September 2016 in Braunschweig .

The plot describes the fight between Superman and the "mad scientist" Dr. Abner Sedgwick, who, out of frustration at his lack of recognition by the scientific community, wants to take revenge on the world by destroying the symbol of goodness - Superman.

The musical also describes the love story between Lois Lane , a colleague of Superman's alter ego Clark Kent, Superman and a rival Max Mencken, also a columnist for the Daily Planet, who teams up with Sedgwick to get Superman out of the way.

The first performance of the musical took place on March 29, 1966 in New York on Broadway and was subsequently seen in St. Louis and Kansas City.

In 1975 a television show was produced that was shortened compared to the original and changed in some plot elements.

The musical has experienced its renaissance since 2007, when it was performed again in concert in Los Angeles . This was followed by productions in Dallas and New York and, since 2014, in Europe ( London ).

The German-language premiere took place on September 23, 2016 in Braunschweig. The German translation and production are by Katarina Krüper and Clemens Bahn.
