Joe Shuster

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Joseph "Joe" Shuster (born July 10, 1914 in Toronto , Ontario , † July 30, 1992 in Los Angeles ) was an American cartoonist and co-inventor of the cartoon character Superman .

Life

When Shuster was nine years old, his family moved to Cleveland , Ohio , where he met Jerry Siegel . The two quickly became friends and together they published their first science fiction stories. During this time Shuster also improved his drawing skills. He created drawings for the high school newspaper The Glenville Torch , which were captioned by Jerry Siegel. In 1936 he and Siegel started working for DC Comics and created other new characters such as Dr. Occult , Slam Bradley and Radio Squad before selling the rights to Superman to DC for $ 130 in 1938.

The inspiration for the character of Superman was largely influenced by comics such as Roy Cranes Wash Tubbs . Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel co-designed Superman in 1932 after repeatedly trying their hand at a character named Funnyman . The dwindling eyesight later shortened Shuster's career. However, by that time Shuster and Siegel had already made their way into American pop culture and history. Shuster died on July 30, 1992. In the same year he was inducted into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame .

The Joe Shuster Awards were named after him, with which the achievements in the field of comics and graphic novels are recognized.
