Eugene Kaufmann
Eugen Carl Kaufmann , later Eugene Charles Kent , (born January 8, 1892 in Frankfurt am Main , † June 21, 1984 in London ) was an architect of German descent who emigrated to England because of his Jewish origins .
Life
After studying architecture in Berlin and Munich , Kaufmann joined the Magdeburg City Planning Office under the direction of Bruno Taut .
Since 1925, under the direction of Ernst May, he was employed in the municipal building administration on the Neues Frankfurt project , for example the building for the municipal vehicle fleet was constructed under his direction and he worked on the Praunheim housing estate . He was best known as the head of department T (for typing), he was under 16 employees including Ferdinand Kramer.
Together with Max Cetto, Josef Hartwig, Robert Michel and Joseph Gantner, he was a member of the Frankfurt October Group founded in October 1928.
Between 1931 and 1933 he worked with May as a city planner in the USSR at the invitation of the Soviet Union . From here he emigrated directly to London, where he ran his own architecture office until 1967.
In 1929, 1930 and 1937 he took part in the CIAMs .
The RIBA Library in London is in possession of the unpublished manuscript of Eugene Charles Kent's Autobiographical Memoirs , written around 1977 .
Buildings and designs
- 1922: Competition design for a Volkshaus in Halle an der Saale (awarded a 1st prize)
- 1929: Design for an elementary school (called Hindenburg School ) in Frankfurt-Praunheim
- 1929: Competition design for the Haselhorst estate of the Reich Research Society for Economic Efficiency in Building and Housing eV in Berlin (together with Herbert Boehm ; awarded a 2nd prize)
- 1929–1930: together with Herbert Boehm and Eugen Blanck : shelter pavilion in Huthpark in Frankfurt-Seckbach .
- 1930: Pavilion school in Frankfurt-Praunheim.
- 1930–1932: Taunus School in Wörsdorf, together with the later Nazi educator Franz Kade (today's Franz Kade School ) in Wörsdorf
Honors
The Eugen-Kaufmann-Straße in Frankfurt-Kalbach was named in April 2013 after it.
