David Newman (Author)

David Newman (born February 4, 1937 in New York City , † June 26, 2003 ibid) was an American editor, screenwriter and film producer.

Life

David Newman studied at the University of Michigan , where he graduated in 1958. He then started working with Robert Benton as an editor for Esquire magazine . His colleague also persuaded him to enter the film business. His very first screenplay for Bonnie and Clyde (1967) earned him an Oscar nomination. He then worked with Benton to write scripts for films like Is' what, Doc? (1972), In Bad Society (1972) and In the Silence of the Night (1982). He was also involved in the first three Superman films . As a film producer, he produced Who Rides a Tiger (1965) and ROTOR - The Killer Machine (1989).

He also wrote scripts for Broadway musicals like It's a Bird… It's a Plane… It's Superman and revues like Oh! Calcutta! . He received a Tony nomination in 1997 as the writer of the musical The Life , along with Ira Gasman and Cy Coleman .

Newman died in 2003 of complications from a stroke .
