In Bad Company (original title: Bad Company ) is an American western from 1972. Directed by Robert Benton , who also wrote the screenplay with David Newman .

action

The action takes place in 1863 during the Civil War . Drew Dixon, who lives in Ohio , is being sent away by his family to prevent him from being drafted into the army. On the hike west, he meets Jake Rumsey, Arthur Simms and Loney. The men commit some thefts together. They are hunted as much by the stolen citizens as they are by the criminals led by Big Joe.

Some of the gang members are robbed and hanged by Big Joe's people. Dixon and Rumsey ride on together until they run into the Big Joes gang, whose members they kill in a shootout. Rumsey robs his accomplice and joins a gang, while Dixon offers to help the marshal who pursues the gang. Some gang members are shot, others - including Rumsey - are captured and supposed to be hanged.

Rumsey tells Dixon he knows where a large sum of money has been buried. Thereupon Dixon works unsuccessfully for Rumsey at the Marshal. Since the pardon is rejected, Dixon helps his partner to escape. After traveling together for a while, he realizes that the promised money does not exist; nevertheless he wants to stay with Rumsey until the latter pays back the money stolen from him. In the final scene, Rumsey and Dixon rob a bank together.

Because of this unusually realistic depiction of the Wild West and the characters, who are more anti-heroes than heroes in the classic Western sense, In Bad Gesellschaft must beclassifiedas anti-Western .
