Robert Benton

Robert Benton (born September 29, 1932 in Waxahachie , Texas , USA ) is an American director , screenwriter and film producer . He first established his fame as a screenwriter and then achieved international success as a director.

Career

Robert Benton grew in his small birthplace Waxahachie up, made at the University of Texas his Bachelor of Fine Arts and went to New York, where he attended the Columbia University the Master Degree acquired. His career aspiration was to become a painter, but his long-term work for Esquire , most recently as art director , brought him more to writing. Together with Harvey Schmidt, he published The In and Out Book in 1962 . At the same time he began to develop the script for Bonnie and Clyde with David Newman . After great initial difficulties, it was made into a film in 1966. After further successes with Two Dirty Scoundrels (1969) and Is' was, Doc? , for which the filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich provided the plot , the team of authors ended their collaboration in 1972 with In Bad Society . The film was also Robert Benton's debut as a director. For his world success Kramer against Kramer , as well as for his later directorial work, his own script was often the template.
