Nobody's Fool - Permanently irresistible (original title: Nobody's Fool ) is the title of a US-American film that Robert Benton made in 1994 based on the novel of the same name (published in 1993) by Richard Russo . The small-town comedy describes the life of the aging casual worker Sully, played by Paul Newman .

action

Sixty-year-old casual worker Sully lives in a small town. Although he gets on well with most of his fellow human beings, it seems like he has missed many of life's opportunities. Almost thirty years ago he left his wife and young son Peter, with whom he was never able to develop a close relationship. Since then he has lived with his former teacher Miss Beryl on rent. He is constantly fighting with his boss Carl, so that he hardly leaves him a useful job. Both lead a kind of private battle over a snow blower . Sully is also in love with Carl's wife Toby, who is constantly cheated on by her husband.

In this situation, in which Sully has hardly any career prospects because of a leg injury, Peter returns home with his son for Thanksgiving. When Peter is looking for a job and Sully offers him to join him, they have the opportunity to approach. But this endangers the friendship with his previous employee Rub, for whom there is no longer any work. Toby also makes him an offer to move to Hawaii together . In view of his only just developing bonds with his son, Sully refuses, so she leaves the city alone.

description

The film depicts life in the fictional small town of North Bath in the eastern United States. The exterior of Nobody's Fool was filmed in the Hudson Valley town of Beacon between November 1993 and February 1994 . Some false facades were erected, and the shop displays and nameplates were changed for the duration of the filming. The production company paid the city the amount of 40,000 US dollars as compensation for police protection, garbage disposal and inconvenience caused by the shooting.

A whole series of characters are grouped around Sully, each with their own characteristics. Even between Sully and Carl, there is some kind of quarrel-based friendship.

Bruce Willis ' name was deliberately not mentioned on the movie poster or in the opening credits, so as not to give viewers the impression that the rather melancholy and quiet comedy is the typical "Bruce Willis action film".

Jessica Tandy died after filming ended. The film is dedicated to her.

Reviews

  • epd-Film (December 1995): No question about it, NOBODY'S FOOL is an actor's film, a well-written and convincingly played story.
  • Prisma Online: A brilliantly cast and acted small town comedy starring a terrific Paul Newman. The film impressively captures the provincial small-town environment in which everyone knows everyone. The gags are lifelike and therefore really delicious.

Awards

Paul Newman won the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 1995 Berlinale . He has received nominations for the Oscar , the Golden Globe and the American Drama Guild , the Screen Actors Guild .
