Richard Russo (born July 15, 1949 in Johnstown , New York ) is an American writer .

Life

Richard Russo grew up in Gloversville in upstate New York. He began studying archeology at the University of Arizona , then switched to literary studies and graduated with a doctorate in philosophy and a master's degree in creative writing . He then taught at various American universities : at Penn State University in Altoona , Pennsylvania , at Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven , at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and at Colby College in Waterville ( Maine ). He has been working as a freelance writer since his novel Nobody’s Fool was successfully screened . In 1999 he settled in the coastal town of Camden, Maine with his wife, a real estate agent, and two daughters .

In his realistically narrated works, Russo describes mainly crisis-ridden small towns in the American East; He is a master of humorous portraits of weird people who are not lucky in life. In 2002 he received a Pulitzer Prize for his novel "Empire Falls" . Three years later, the television movie Empire Falls was released, for which Russo wrote the screenplay, for which he was nominated for an Emmy in 2005.
