history

The settlement of Camden began in 1769 when James Richards and his family moved from New Hampshire. He had first reached the area as a lumberjack, cutting trees for British ship masts. His two brothers also settled in Camden with their families. James Richards built a sawmill and a flour mill on the Meguntiook River. In 1779, buildings on Camden Harbor were burned down by the British.

Camden, then still written Cambden , was organized on February 17, 1791 as an independent town from the Camden Plantation and incorporated into Knox County. Camden was initially named with the spelling Cambden after Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden , of whom it was reported that General Samuel Waldo should have met with him to secure the land grant of 1768 for this area. After the son of Charles Pratt, John Pratt, 1st Marquess Camden , the spelling of the name was changed in Camden, the name of the town has been adjusted.

The area belonged to the Waldo patent , previously also called the Muscongus patent, and for a time it was called Megunticook Plantation after the Indian name for the area. In 1836 land was added by Warren and in 1891 the town of Rockport split off from Camden. More land was given to Rockport in 1893.

A first shipyard was built in 1792 and in 1820 a wool and paper mill was established on the Megunticook River. Steam ships reached Penobscot Bay in 1823, connecting Camden with Boston and Bath. As a result, tourists also reached the coastline in the late 19th century.

In Camden, the mountains reach the harbor and can be seen for miles. Mount Beatty was equipped with a gun station that contained a twelve-pound cannon and an 18-pound cannon during the British-American War , and although there were no gunners and few soldiers in Camden, the appearance of defensive readiness kept the British at bay.

The former railway company Rockport Railroad maintained a route from Rockport to Simonton Corners, which was superfluous and discontinued after the construction of the Rockland, Thomaston and Camden Street Railway tramway . The tram route itself was closed in 1931.

Camden and the port of Camden served as a film set in several films, for example scenes for the films Carousel (1956) and A Summer in Long Island were filmed in the port , and Camden is also the setting for the film In the Bedroom by Todd Field .

Regular events

Every year since it was founded in 2005, the Camden International Film Festival ( CIFF ) takes place in Camden , which is exclusively dedicated to documentary film . Due to the positive development of participation (filmmakers, donors, volunteers), the 2009 film festival was supplemented by the establishment of the Points North Forum , which also takes place annually , a discussion and debate forum for professional documentary filmmakers in the United States and worldwide. In a partnership with the Tribeca Film Institute , the Camden / TFI Retreat was added in 2015 , a one-week training course for a new generation of American documentary filmmakers who strive for creative, cinema-grade films that place strong personalities at the center of their filmmaking. Since then, these artist programs have been differentiated and emerged: the Shortform Editing Residency , the North Star Fellowship , Points North 1: 1 Meetings and the 4th World Indigenous Media Lab .
