Geographical location

Union is in northwest Knox County and borders Lincoln County . To the north of the area is Senebec Pond and to the south are Seven Tree Pond and Crawford Pond . Another large lake, Round Pond , is centrally located in the town's area. The St. Georges River flows south, passing through Senebec Pond and Seven Tree Pond , as well as other lakes in Knox County, on its way to the Atlantic Ocean. The surface of the area is slightly hilly and the 207 m high Barrett Hill is the highest point in the area of ​​the town.

history

Union was organized as a Town on October 20, 1786. Previously the area was known as Sterlington Plantation. Union was part of the Muscongus Grant , later known as the Waldo Patent , and was purchased from the Waldo heirs in 1774 by John Taylor of Lunenburg, Massachusetts. In the same year the settlement of Union started. The settlement was initially known as Taylortown after John Taylor, but as a plantation, the area was organized as Sterlingtown Plantation . When Union was organized as a town on October 20, 1786, the name changed to Union .

The Knox Railroad connected Union with Warren. It was discontinued in 1932.
