history
Waldoboro was part of the Waldo Patent , a grant based on the Muscungus patent of 1629 and later owned by Samuel Waldo . The first settlers who were recruited by Samuel Waldo came from Scotland, Ireland and Germany and reached the area between 1733 and 1740. The settlement did not last long, it was attacked by Indians a short time later, the houses destroyed and the residents killed or abducted. After the Peace of Aachen in 1748, the area was repopulated. Waldo traveled to Germany and brought 1,500 settlers with him to Maine. A large part of it settled on the west side of Broad Bay. Around 1763–64, the lands on this side were claimed by Drowne under the Pemaquid patent and the Musciongu patent. The settlers were therefore obliged to buy from Drowne the land that had then been ceded by Waldo. After completing this request, Brown made another claim on the area. About 300 settlers then left the area and emigrated to South Carolina. A settlement of 80 families, however, arose in the area that was named after Samuel Waldo Waldoboro .
The first child born in Waldoboro, at that time still Broad Bay Plantaion , was Conrad Heyer in 1749 . He served in the American Revolutionary War and died in 1856 at the age of 106.
Waldoboro was organized as Town on June 29, 1773 in the original spelling Waldoborough and in 1786 became Shire Town of Lincoln County. This was Waldoboro until 1880 when the county seat was moved to Wiscasset.
