history

Edgecomb was originally founded in 1744 by Samuel Trask and others. After ten years of undisturbed tenure living on their land, three men from Boston appeared and demanded ownership based on an Indian title. The new applicants divided the land into several lots on the Sheep Scot River and numbered them. It was found that the Indian title had no valid limits and that no occupation had been made under it and that the matter benefited greatly from speculation. After these facts became known, a Boston lawyer took over the protection of the settlers' rights free of charge and the three Bostonians gave up their claim. The plantation was given the name Freetown in gratitude for the attorney's generosity. It kept this name until it was organized as a town on March 3, 1774. The town was named after George Edgcumbe , who was honored as a friend of the American colonies during the American War of Independence .

The island of Jerernisquain , today the town of Westport, was detached from the area of the town of Edgecomb in 1828 and organized independently.
