Westport Island was organized as an independent town on February 5, 1828. Previously the island was known as Jeremisquam and belonged to the area of the Town Edgecomb. European explorers reached the area as early as the 17th century and in 1649 John Richards is said to have bought the island from the Sagamore Robinhood.
To the north of Westport Island are the remains of an earth fortification that was built during the War of 1812. The fortification was named Fort McDonough .
George Davie Wiscasset acquired land from three Abenaki Indians in 1734 , which also included Westport Island. After the end of the Indian wars, the settlement of the area began in 1750. Litigation arose between a group of Boston investors, the Wiscasset Proprietors, who had acquired the property from Wiscasset's granddaughter, and the owners of a grant from the Plymouth Colony, the Kennebec Proprietors. When these were settled, the Kennebec Proprietors got the Wiscasset area and the Wiscasset Proprietors got the island of Jeremysquam.
