history

Arrowsic was organized as an independent town on March 2, 1841. Previously, the area on the island of Arrowsic in the Kennebec River belonged to the area of ​​the town of Georgetown. Settlement by European immigrants started around 1625. The name is of Indian origin and translates as "place of obstacle / handicap" ( obstruction ). A trading post was set up on Arrowsic Island in 1654, and a short time later a shipyard, foundry, mills and farms. Like most settlements, Arrowsic was attacked by Indians in 1676 and houses burned down. 30 residents were killed or taken prisoner. Excavations have revealed evidence that residents had a high standard of living at the time.
