A trading post was set up on Arrowsic Island in 1654, and a short time later a shipyard, foundry, mills and farms. Like most settlements, Arrowsic was attacked by Indians in 1676 and houses burned down. 30 residents were killed or taken prisoner. Excavations have revealed evidence that residents had a high standard of living at the time.
