history

The island was called Erascohegan by the Abenaki , which means good place for spear fishing . In 1649 John Parte, a fisherman from Bedfordshire, England, bought the area from Chief Mowhotiwormet, also known as Chief Robinhood, for a large barrel of rum and a couple of pumpkins. Parker settled on Parker's Island , which was later named after him .

During the King Philip's War , the settlements in the Kennebec River Valley were attacked by Indians and burned to the ground. This happened again in 1689 in King William's War and only after the Peace of Utrecht did European settlers settle again.

First, Newtown-on-Arrowsic at the southern end of Arrowsic Island was settled and rebuilt in 1714 . The Massachusetts General Court established the town in 1716 as Georgetown-on-Arrowsic . It was named after Fort St. George. Parter's Island, Woolwich, Phippsburg and Bath also belonged to the area. At that time including the area of West Bath.

Affected by the acts of war in the Drummer's War , settlers began to settle in the region again from the 1750s and after the peace in 1759 the settlements continued to grow.

In addition to the merchant marine and fishing, which were the main livelihoods in the area, the land was used as grazing land and for livestock. Butter and cheese were produced. In 1858 there were two sawmills, a sailmaker and a shipbuilder.

Parker's Island was added to North Yarmouth in 1738 and Small Point, now Phippsburg, in 1741. The area of Bath was organized as an independent town in 1781, Phippsburg in 1814 and Arrowsic in 1841 split off and organized independently.
