history

Bremen in Maine is the oldest Bremen in the USA. It was founded in 1742 by three families who moved from the nearby Waldoburg (today Waldoboro ), a settlement founded by German immigrants in 1736, and named their new settlement after their hometown Bremen . Towards the end of the 18th century, a number of German-speaking settlers moved from Waldoburg - which in the meantime was increasingly inhabited by settlers of other origins, who had enforced that the place was renamed Waldoboro and that the service in the local church was held in English instead of German was - to Bremen , where no non-German immigrants had settled. They took their church, built in 1772, with them. This church still stands today and is considered one of the three oldest churches in Maine. On February 19, 1828 Bremen was "incorporated" as the Town of Bremen , which is considered the official foundation. From about 100 inhabitants at that time, Bremen grew to a size of 840 inhabitants by 1870. Today Bremen is a commuter village, the working population is largely in the surrounding cities.
