The Monhegan Memorial Library is located in Monhegan . There was a small library on Monhegan as early as the 19th century, but later there were only a few books in the local school and in the inns that lent the books to guests. Due to the tragic death of two children in 1926 who were dragged into the surf, a memorial was to be erected and this was to be a library. Sponsors could be won for the establishment of a children's library and summer guests who had been contacted donated large amounts of books and money. The books were initially housed in a private living room. A short time later, a separate building was built for the ever-growing collection, which now also includes books for adults. In memory of the two drowned children, it was first called Jackie and Edward's Library and was only renamed Monhegan Library when it was officially founded in 1938 . The name was later changed to Monhegan Memorial Library .
