history
French fishermen used the islands early on. They were first mentioned in a letter from John Josselyn from 1671, in which he reported that houses, cows, farmland and pastures can be found on the islands. From 1728 William Vaughn used the islands as a location for fishing. After he withdrew his boats in 1757, there was a raid on Ebenezer Hall and his family, the only ones left on the island.
Hall was the first permanent European settler to settle on Matinicus Isle with his family in 1751. He made the land usable by slash and burn, thereby depriving the Penobscots , who had used the islands seasonally for generations, the foundation. The Penobscot wrote a letter of protest to Spencer Phips , Deputy Governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay , which was unsuccessful. They then burned Hall's house and killed Hall, taking his wife and two daughters prisoner. One son escaped, another was on the mainland at the time. A son later returned to the island with his family.
To give residents the right to vote, the area was organized as Matinicus Isle Plantation on October 22, 1840. It included the islands of Matinicus Island, Matinicus Rock, Wooden Ball Island, and Ragged Island. Ragged Island, Wooden Ball Island, Seal Island, and Matinicus Rock were split off in 1897 and organized as the Criehaven Plantation. This ended in 1925 when the Criehaven Plantation was disorganized.
