South Thomaston is a town in Knox County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1,558 inhabitants in 674 households on an area of 46.54 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , South Thomaston has a total area of 46.54 km², of which 29.63 km² is land and 16.91 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
South Thomaston is located in the south of Knox County, bounded to the east by the Weskeag River , a short, mainly tidal river affected by the salty waters of the Atlantic Ocean and to the west by Georges Bay . Several islands belong to the area of the town. The best known is Spruce Head , which is connected to the mainland by a bridge. The surface of the area is slightly hilly, with no significant elevations.

history
The first settlement by European settlers occurred in 1767 when Elisha Snow settled down and built a sawmill on the Westkeag River. More settlers followed. After another sawmill was built by Joseph Coombs in 1773, the two joined forces and built a grain mill.
The Indian name of this area was Wessaweskeag , which translated means land of wonders . The name was contracted to Weskeag by the first settlers , then to Keag , and finally it has shrunk to Gig .
The South Thomaston Baptist Church is the second oldest church between Penobscot Bay and the Kennebec River. It was founded in 1784 and is now a listed building. A meeting house was built in 1796.
South Thomaston was spun off from the Town of Thomaston on July 28, 1848 and organized as an independent town. Portions of St. George were added in 1865 and land was given to Owls Head in 1921. Thomaston was named after John Thomas .
