Knox County is a county in the state of Maine in the United States . The county seat is in Rockland . It is named after Henry Knox , the first US Secretary of War .

According to the US Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 2,958 square kilometers. 2011 square kilometers, corresponding to 67.98 percent, are water areas. The county is bordered by the counties: Waldo County and Lincoln County .

Eleven sites in the county have the status of a National Historic Landmark due to their historical significance . A total of 94 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 11, 2017).

As of the 2000 census , the county had 39,618 people. There were 16,608 households and 10,728 families. The population density was 42 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.28% White, 0.24% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.36% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, and 0.12% other races Groups; 0.78% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.57% of the population.
Of the 16,608 households, 28.30% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.20% were married couples living together, 9.00% were single mothers. 35.40% were not families. 29.00% were single households and 12.70% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.83 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.40% of residents under 18 years of age, 6.30% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.40% between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.70% between 45 and 64 years of age 17.20% were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 95.20 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,774 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,819. Males had a median income of $ 30,704 versus $ 22,382 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,981. 10.10% of the population and 6.40% of families are below the poverty line. 11.90% of these were under 18 years of age and 8.00% were 65 years of age or older.
