history

The US Lighthouse Service was founded in 1789. The history of the Marshall Point Lighthouse dates back to 1831 when a certain Samuel Marshall sold the US government a few acres of land on the coast of Maine for $ 120. In the following year, the first lighthouse and a lighthouse keeper's house at Marshall Point were built from field stones for a construction cost of around 2,900 US dollars. The round tower, almost seven meters high, had a diameter of almost six meters at the base and three meters at the top.

The first tower light consisted of seven oil lamps (four in a row and another three above) with reflectors about 350 millimeters in diameter.

In 1858, a new eight-meter high granite and brick tower was built on the current site for $ 5,000. It stands directly on the rocky coastline and can only be reached via a long wooden walkway that was originally covered. His cast iron lamp with a ring or step lens ( Fresnel lens ) replaced the seven oil lamps. In 1898 a bell tower with a bronze bell was added. The bell was replaced by a fog horn in 1969 .

The lighthouse light was electrified in 1935 . An automation in 1971 made the lighthouse keepers obsolete. The lens has been replaced with a new plastic lens. Batteries secure the supply of emergency power .

The first lighthouse keeper's house was destroyed by lightning in 1895 and replaced in the same year by a new house in the typical colonial style of the 19th century. After the last lighthouse keeper moved out in 1971, the house stood empty for a long time. In 1988 the house was renovated and in 1990 a small museum was set up on the ground floor. The upper floor is rented.
