Oxford County is a county in the state of Maine in the United States . The seat of the county administration ( Shire Town ) is in Paris .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the county has a total area of 5,634 square kilometers. Of this, 252 square kilometers, corresponding to 4.47 percent, are water areas. The county borders the counties in a clockwise direction: Franklin County , Androscoggin County , Cumberland County , York County , Carroll County, New Hampshire , Coös County, New Hampshire, and Le Granit, Canada.

According to the 2000 census , the county had 54,755 people. There were 22,314 households and 15,173 families. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.25% White, 0.17% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, and 0.11% other races Groups; 0.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.53% of the population.
Of the 22,314 households, 30.40% had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.10% were married couples living together, 9.50% were single mothers. 32.00% were not families. 25.60% were single households and 11.00% had someone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.20% residents under the age of 18, 6.50% between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.80% between 25 and 44 years of age, and 25.50% between 45 and 64 years of age 16.10% were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.40 males, for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 93.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,435 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,794. Males had a median income of $ 30,641 versus $ 21,233 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,945. 11.80% of the population and 8.30% of families are below the poverty line. 14.80% of them were under 18 years of age and 10.10% were 65 years of age or older.
