Sumner is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 939 people lived there in 565 households on an area of 116.21 km².

Geographical location
Sumner is in the east of Oxford County. The West Branch Nezinscot River , a headwaters of the Nezinscot River , which is a tributary of the Androscoggin River , flows through the area of the town in a southerly direction. In the northeast in the area of the town is the Labrador Pond and southwest of it the Pleasant Pond . The North Pond borders in the south . The surface of the area is hilly, the highest point is the 649 m high Black Mountain

history
Initially, the area, which was organized independently on June 13, 1798 as Town Sumner, belonged to Hartford. The settlement areas were called East and West Butterfield, and West Butterfield Plantation became Sumner. Sumner was named after Governor Increase Sumner . Settlement started in the southeast and the settlers came from Plymouth County, Massachusetts. They were former soldiers of the War of Independence.
Parts of Plantation No. 2, later Franklin Plantation, now Peru, were added in 1838, 1844 and 1863. Land was given to Buckfield in 1856.
The Rumford Junction – Kennebago railway runs through Sumner.
