Brownfield is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1597 inhabitants in 973 households on an area of ​​117.71 km².

Geographical location

Brownfield is located in southwest Oxford County on the New Hampshire border . The Saco River flows through the town's area in a southerly direction; partly it forms the eastern border of the town. In the area of ​​the town there are several smaller lakes, such as the Burnt Meadow Pond in the center and the Pequawket Pond in the south . The surface of the area is hilly, the highest point being the 480 m high Stone Mountain .

history

The Brownfield area was awarded three grants by the state of Massachusetts to Captain Henry Young Brown for his services in the Seven Years War in North America . One of the conditions of the grant was that it would have to settle 38 families by June 1770 and the settlement would have to have a priest three years later. The first clearing work started in 1765 and in 1787 the settlement was organized as a Brownfield Plantation . The organization as a town took place on February 20, 1802. Brownfield was named after Henry Brown, the landowner.

In 1807, Brownfield got land from Porterfield when the Town of Porter was organized. Land was given to Denmark in 1821 and 1907 and to Hiram in 1852. Brownfield received land from Porter in 1831, 1832 and 1855.

The Maine State Route 160 runs from the south east by the Town towards Denmark. In a southerly direction, Maine State Route 113 runs partially parallel to the Saco River and leads from Fryeburg in the north to Baldwin in the south. They both meet in the Village East Brownfield.

The Portland – Lunenburg railway runs through Brownfield. There is also a train station there.

Public facilities

Brownfield does not have its own hospital or medical facility. The closest are in Fryeburg, Bridgton and North Conway, New Hampshire.

The Brownfield Public Library is located on Brownfield's Main Street.

Brownfield is part of the Maine School Administrative District 72 along with Denmark, Fryeburg, Lovell, Stoneham, Stow and Sweden .
