Hanover is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 238 people lived there in 235 households on an area of 19.58 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Hanover has a total area of 19.58 km², of which 18.23 km² is land and 1.35 km² consists of water .
Geographical location
Hanover is centrally located in Oxford County. There are several lakes in the area of the town. The Androscoggin River flows through the south of the area . To the north is the only lake, Howard Pond . The surface of the area is hilly, the highest point is the 538 m high Mount Dimrock in the north of Hanover.

history
The first settlement in the area took place from 1774. Nathaniel Segar is named as the first settler. He served during the American Revolution and returned in 1780. In 1781 he was captured by the Indians on one of their last military campaigns and held by the British in Canada for six months. Then he returned to Hanover. More settlers followed. Around 1792 Phineas Howard from Temple New Hampshire bought all of the previously unpopulated land from the state of Massachusetts and it was initially named Howard's Gore after him . On February 14, 1843, the area was organized as an independent town under the name Hanover. Part of the area previously belonged to Town Bethel, to which Hanover gave land in 1849.

traffic
The US Highway 2 runs in west-east direction by the Town. It follows the course of the Androscoggin River and connects Hanover with Bethel in the west and Rumford in the east.

Hanover does not have its own hospital or medical facility. The closest facilities are in West Paris, Disfield and Rumford.

education
Hanover, along with Andover, Bethel, Gilead, Greenwood, Newry and Woodstock, is part of the Maine School Administrative District 44 . There are two elementary schools, Crescent Park Elementary School and Woodstock Elementary School , as well as Telstar Middle School and Telstar High School .
