Geographical location

Paris is in the southeast of Oxford County. The Little Androscoggin River flows through the area of ​​the town in a southerly direction. Hall Pond is in the southwest . The surface of the area is slightly hilly, the highest point is the 533 m high Streaked Mountain .

history

The land grant for Paris was given in 1771 by Captain Joshua Fuller and another 64 people from his company for their services in the Seven Years' War in North America . Settlement began in 1779 in the Paris Hill area. A first church was built in 1795. Paris was organized as Town on June 20, 1793, previously the area was named Plantation No. 4 and after Oxford County was established in 1805, Paris became Shire Town of Oxford County's. The Paris-born Hannibal Hamlin was one of the most famous residents .

In 1818 parts of the area were ceded to Hebron and in 1828 Buckfield area was added. Land was given to Norway in 1859, some of which was taken back in 1861. Woodstock took over territories in 1825 and 1827, some of which were returned to Paris in 1841 and 1880. Land was given to Oxford in 1838 and land was added to West Paris in 1957. West Paris split from Paris in 1958.

There are deposits of crystals and semi-precious stones in Paris. They were discovered in 1820 by Elijah Hamlin and Ezekiel Holmes, who found a green tourmaline in the Mica mine, the first in the United States. Other deposits were later discovered in which whitmoreit , earlshannonite , hydroxylherderite , herderite and kosnarite were found.

The Maine State Route 26 runs through the eastern part of the Town and follows the course of the Little Androscoggin River. It connects Paris with West Paris in the north and Norway in the west. Maine State Route 117 branches off from here in Village South Paris in an easterly direction and leads to Buckfield and Maine State Route 119 in a south-easterly direction to Hebron.

Freight traffic is handled on the Portland – Island Pond railway line , with a station in South Paris.

Public facilities

Hospitals and medical facilities for the population of Paris are located in South Paris, Norway and Auburn.

In Paris, the Hamlin Memorial Library & Museum is located in the historic County Jails building. It was built in 1822. After new county buildings were built in South Paris, the former county jail was converted into a library and museum.

The Paris Public Library is located on Market Square in South Paris.
