Mexico is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 2681 inhabitants in 1404 households on an area of ​​61.05 km².

history

The colonization of Mexico began in 1780, with Jonathan Holman and a group of other men from Sutton, Massachusetts. They bought land that was previously known as Township # 1 and named it Holmantown Plantation. A part was split off in 1803 and organized as an independent town under the name Dixfield. Mexico was organized as a town on February 13, 1818. The name was chosen after the country Mexico and in honor of the inhabitants who were struggling for independence from Spain at the time .

US Highway 2 runs parallel to the bank of the Androscoggin River through Mexico. In a northerly direction parallel to the Swift River, a tributary of the Androscoggin River, Maine State Route 120 runs on the western bank and Maine State Route 17 on the eastern bank.

Public facilities

Mexico does not have its own hospital or medical facility. The closest facilities are in Rumford, Dixfield and Canton.

In Mexico, the Mexico Public Library is on Main Street.
