Hiram is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1620 inhabitants in 905 households on an area of ​​100.67 km².

Geographical location

Hiram is located in the southeast of Oxford County and is bordered by York County to the south and Cumberland County to the east. In the northeastern border Parker Pond and the South East Pond in the area of the Town, located in the west of Clemons Pond and the Southwest Tafton Pond and the Stanley Pond . The Saco River flows in a southerly direction through the northeast corner of the town and forms the border to the neighboring town of Baldwin in the southeast. The surface of the area is hilly, the highest point is the 491 m high Bill Merrill Mountain in the southwest of Hiram.

The first settlement by European settlers took place between 1774 and 1780. The first organization took place on February 27, 1807 as a district. Hiram was organized as a town on February 27, 1814. The name was chosen in memory of Hiram I (Tire) . In 1790 General Peleg Wadsworth bought land in Hiram and built a farm there between 1792 and 1794. One of his descendants is the writer, poet, translator and playwright Henry Wadsworth Longfellow .

Portions of Baldwin were added in 1821 and 1844, and Brownfield in 1852.

In Hiram, the Soldiers Memorial Library is on Maine Street. The library building was erected in 1915.
