Newry is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 329 inhabitants in 1334 households on an area of 159.41 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Newry has a total area of 159.41 km², of which 159.34 km² are land and 0.08 km² are water .
Geographical location
Newry is centrally located in Oxford County. The Androscoggin River flows a little south of the town and, coming from the north, the Sunday River and the central Bear River flow into it. Other smaller rivers also flow south and flow into the Androscoggin River. The surface of the town is very hilly, the highest point is the 1008 m high Sunday River Whitecap in the northwest of the town.

history
The settlement of the area started in 1781 by Benjamin Barker and his two brothers with their families from Methuen , Massachusetts and Ithiel Smith from Cape Elizabeth . They were attacked and driven out of Canada by Indians in 1782. They returned after the peace of the Indian Wars. In 1794, New Jersey's John J. Holmes received the grant for the area. He named it Bostwick Plantation after his sister. On June 15, 1805, the area was organized as a town under the name Newry. The name Newry came from some settlers who had immigrated from Newry , Northern Ireland.

Parks
The Grafton Notch State Park with a size of 1,259 hectares is one of the largest state parks in Maine. It is located in the northwest of Newry between Newry and Upton. It is part of the Maine Birding Trail.
Sports
The Sunday River Resort is a ski area that uses the northern slopes of Black Mountain and Barker Mountain. The Dumont Cup is held in the ski area. In summer there is also a golf course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and routes for mountain bikers are available.
Economy and Infrastructure
In the area of the Town Newry there are deposits of different minerals that are mined in several quarries. They include the Dunton Gem Quarry , in which Elbaite and Amblygonite are mined, and also the Crooker Gem Pegmatite Quarries , in which Tourmaline quartzes are found. Other minerals are: zanazziite , whitlockite , heterosite , whitmoreit , eosphorite , earlshannonite , hydroxylherderite , herderite and columbite .
traffic
Newry is accessed by US Highway 2 , which does not run over the area of the town, but it touches the confluence of the Bear River in the Androscoggin River. At this point, Maine State Route 26 branches off in a northerly direction.

There is no hospital of its own in Newry. The closest hospitals are Rumford Hospital in Rumford and Androscoggin Valley Hospital in Berlin, New Hampshire. Closest university is the University of Maine at Farmington.

education
Newry is part of Maine School Administrative District 44 along with Andover, Bethel, Greenwood, Gilead, Hanover and Woodstock . There are two elementary schools, Crescent Park Elementary School and Woodstock Elementary School , as well as Telstar Middle School and Telstar High School . The Baily Memorial Library is located in the Clarendon Grange Community Center .
