Geographical location

Stoneham is in the west of Oxford County. Much of the Stoneham area is part of the White Mountain National Forest and is in the eastern portion of the National Forest. This area includes Horseshoe Pond , Shell Pond, and Virginia Lake . Further south, outside the National Forest, is Keewaydin Lake . The Mill Brook flows south through the town. The surface of the area is hilly, the highest point being the 880 m high Speckled Mountain .

Stoneham was organized as a town on January 31, 1834 from parts of the Fryeburg Academy Grant Plantation and the Batchelders Grant. In 1841 Stoneham was renamed Usher, but back to Stoneham in 1843.

In Songo Pond Quarry in Stoneham is aquamarine found in the quarry Lord Hill Beryllonite and Hydroxylherderit .
