Canton is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 990 people lived there in 473 households on an area of ​​78.99 km².

Geographical location

Canton is located in the southeast of Oxford County and is bordered to the northeast by Franklin County and to the east by Androscoggin County . The Androscoggin River flows through the area of ​​the town in an easterly direction. Centrally located in the area of ​​the town is the Forest Pond , in the south borders Lake Anasagunticook . The surface of the area is hilly at the edges, the highest point is the 472 m high Canton Mountain in the north of Canton, but very flat in the inner area.

history

The first settlement by European immigrants took place in Canton around 1790. At first it was called Rockomeeko, also Rockmeeko, Rockameeko, Rockamecco or Arrockaumecook because of the Indians living here. These were eradicated by smallpox in the Seven Years' War . The area was organized as an independent town on February 5, 1821. It was previously part of the Town Jay area. Land was surrendered to Jay in 1823, which was returned to Canton in 1824, then surrendered again in 1824 and 1831, and to Peru in 1859. Hartford added areas in 1838, 1839 and 1850.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the northern part of the town, Maine State Route 108 runs in a north-south direction parallel to the Androscoggin River through Canton and connects Canton in the north with Dixfield and in the south with Livermore. From the northeast, Maine State Route 140 joins State Route 198 in Village Canton .

Canton is connected to Livermore Falls by the Canton-Livermore Falls railway line . The route is used for freight traffic. The train station in Canton is closed, however, only the branch line via Rumford is used.

Canton does not have its own hospital or medical facility. The closest are in Dixfield, Farmington, West Paris and Rumford.
