Norway is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there lived 5014 inhabitants in 2804 households on an area of ​​122.58 km².

Geographical location

Norway is located in the southeast of Oxford County and borders on Cumberland County in the southwest . There are several lakes in the area of ​​the town. The largest is the centrally located Pennesseewassee Lake , in the north is the North Pond , west of Pennesseewassee Lake is the Little Pennesseewassee Pond and in the southwest of the Sand Pond . Pennesseewassee Lake drains into the Little Androscoggin River . The surface of the area is hilly, the highest point is the 359 m high Brown Hill in the west of the town.

history

The area of ​​Norway was settled for the first time from 1786, in the two years before that exploration, surveying and clearing had already started in order to gain settlement areas. The first settlers were Joseph and Jonas Stevens, George Lessley, Jeremiah and Amos Hobbs, Nathan Noble and their families. The soil was very fertile, rich in fish and game, there was an abundance of wood, so that the settlement could grow well in the first few years. Initially, the settlers named the area Rustfield Plantation. In 1797 the population had grown to more than five hundred residents and on March 9, 1797 the area was organized as an independent town with the name Norway.

In 1821 the area of ​​a parish-free Gores was added to the area of ​​the Town and in 1859 and 1861 land was exchanged with Paris.

Norway was connected to South Paris by the Norway – South Paris tram . The line was opened in 1895 and closed and dismantled in 1918. In addition, there was a railway connection between the two towns from 1879 to 1939 on the South Paris – Norway railway , which Norway was also connected to the Portland – Island Pond railway .

Today Norway is connected to the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad via a branch line .

The Maine State Route 118 runs in a west-east direction through the area of ​​the town, partly along the south bank of the Pennesseewassee Lake. From here, Maine State Route 117 branches off to the south and Maine State Route 26 to the east .

In Norway, the Norway Memorial Library is located on Maine Street. It goes back to the founding of the Norway Library Association in 1885. In 1938 the building was rebuilt and expanded in the late 1990s.
