The soil was very fertile, rich in fish and game, there was an abundance of wood, so that the settlement could grow well in the first few years. Initially, the settlers named the area Rustfield Plantation. In 1797 the population had grown to more than five hundred residents and on March 9, 1797 the area was organized as an independent town with the name Norway.
In 1821 the area of a parish-free Gores was added to the area of the Town and in 1859 and 1861 land was exchanged with Paris.
Norway was connected to South Paris by the Norway – South Paris tram . The line was opened in 1895 and closed and dismantled in 1918. In addition, there was a railway connection between the two towns from 1879 to 1939 on the South Paris – Norway railway , which Norway was also connected to the Portland – Island Pond railway .
