Denmark is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1148 inhabitants in 1075 households on an area of ​​129.32 km².

Geographical location

Denmark is located in the southeast of Oxford County and borders on Cumberland County . The Saco River forms the southwestern boundary of the town's area. Its tributaries include the Moose Stream , which is fed from the Moose Pond in the north and also flows through the Little Moose Pond . Centrally located in the area of ​​the town is the Granger Pond , in the south the Waldo Pond and the Hancock Pond and in the northwest of the Pleasant Pond . history

Denmark was formed from several grants . One was awarded by the state of Massachusetts to the Fryeburg Academy in Fryeburg, which was founded in 1792 and is still active as a private high school today. Two others were given to private individuals; these grants also included part of the Town Brownfield. Settlement of the area began around 1789. Many of the first settlers were from Andover, Massachusetts. The area was first named Pequaket after an Indian tribe that settled here. Town Denmark was organized as an independent town on February 20, 1807. She got her first post office in 1819.

Parts of Fryeburg were added in 1813 and Brownfield in 1821 and 1907. Land was given to Sebago in 1830 and Bridgton in 1842. In 1847 part of Denmark was organized together with part of Fryeburg as a separate Town of Texas .
