history

The Grant for Hebron was given by Massachusetts to Alexander Shepard in 1777 as payment for surveying a coastline that Shepard assisted with. Shepard expanded his holdings over undeveloped land in the neighborhood to the required size of 36,000 acres. Along with Goddard and John Greenwood, he was one of the most influential settlers in the area. The first settler to reach the area was John Caldwell, and the first family settled in 1778. First the plantation was called Shepardstown, then Bog Brook Plantation. As a town, the area was organized on March 6, 1792 under the name Hebron. Since it was difficult for the settlers to reach the administrative district in the north, the southern part was organized independently as Oxford in 1829.

The Hebron Academy was founded in 1804 by the deacon William Barrows. It still exists today and is a small, independent preparatory school from middle school. It is a boarding and day school for boys and girls.
