Gilead is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there lived 209 inhabitants in 151 households on an area of 50.95 km².

According to the United States Census Bureau , Gilead has a total area of 50.95 km², of which 48.90 km² is land and 2.05 km² is made up of water .
Geographical location
Gilead is in west Oxford County, on the border with Coös County , New Hampshire . The Androscoggin River flows through the area of the town in an easterly direction. From the north and south, several smaller streams flow into the Androscoggin River, the largest being the Wild River , which comes from the south . The surface of the area is hilly, the highest point being the 746 m high Peabody Mountain in the south of Gilead.

history
The first European settlers reached Gilead from 1770/80. It was Oliver Peabody, Enoch Messer and James Pettengill. Pettengill was killed a short time later by passing Indians. The first settlers came with the promise that if they cleared a certain area and built a house and a barn, they would get the land for free. This should encourage other settlers to buy land there and also to settle there. Around 1788/89 more settlers reached the area and settled.
Gilead was organized as a town on June 23, 1804. Previously the area was known as Peabody's Patent and Peabody's Grant . Gilead was named after the biblical Balm of Gilead .
The Portland – Island Pond railway runs through Gilead. It was put into operation in 1853. Since August 12, 1967, only goods traffic has taken place on the route. Passenger traffic on the route was discontinued.

Economy and Infrastructure
traffic
The US Highway 2 runs in west-east direction by the Town and follows the course of Androscoggin Rivers. In a southerly direction, Maine State Route 113 branches parallel to the Wild River and leads to Fryeburg.

Gilead does not have its own hospital or medical facility. The closest hospital is in Berlin , New Hampshire.
There is no library of its own in Gilead. The closest is in Bethel.
education
Gilead, along with Andover, Bethel, Greenwood, Hanover, Newry and Woodstock, is part of the Maine School Administrative District 44 . There are two elementary schools, Crescent Park Elementary School and Woodstock Elementary School , as well as Telstar Middle School and Telstar High School .
