Greenwood is a town in Oxford County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010, 830 people lived there in 810 households on an area of ​​111.58 km².

Greenwood is centrally located in Oxford County. There are several lakes in the area of ​​the town. The Greenwood area was settled from 1802. The first settler was William Yates, followed by Thomas Furlong and Timothy Patch. Greenwood was organized as a town on February 2, 1816. The area was previously known as Plantation No. 4 organized. It was part of the Phillips Academy Grant , also Raymond's (or Twitchell's) Grant and Mosher and Haskell's Grant. In 1893, land was given to Woodstock.

Greenwood was probably not named after the green forests in which it is located, but after the surveyor Alexander Greenwood. In fact, the area was surveyed by Lothrop Lewis, another surveyor. The residents initially wanted to name their Town Russia , but this name was not approved. Initially, the settlers in Greenwood lived from agriculture, which was also helped by the many good opportunities for building mills.

The Maine State Route 26 runs through the northeast corner of the Town along the shores of North Pond , Round Pond and South Pond . It connects Greenwood with Bethel in the north and West Paris in the east. Maine State Route 219 branches off from here in a southerly direction , which later also leaves the town in an easterly direction to West Paris.
