Geographical location

Byron is in the east of Oxford County and borders on Franklin County . The Swift River , a tributary of the Androscoggin River , flows through the area of ​​the town in a southerly direction. The surface of the area is hilly, the highest point is the 834 m high West Mountain in the east of Byron.

history

Byron was initially known as Skilertown . This was the Native American name for the area. When Byron was organized as a town in 1833, it was named after the poet Lord Byron .

At first, Byron was farmed and the soil was good for growing wheat, potatoes, corn and oats. Later also hops, which were sold in the Boston area for making beer. Some businesses also settled here. Sawmills and mining are operated. Phosphate and gold are mined .

There have been five schools in Byron in its history. The last one closed in the 1940s. The building is now used for town gatherings and the Byron Historical Society.

The railway with the Rumford Junction – Kennebago railway reached Byron in 1895. The line is closed today.
