Magnus Schlichting (born December 27, 1850 in Neustadt in Holstein ; † March 27, 1919 in Flensburg ) was a German architect who was particularly active in Neumünster and Flensburg.

Life and work

Magnus Schlichting's father was a master bricklayer in Neustadt on the Baltic Sea. His mother came from a family of teachers. Magnus Schlichting had a total of four siblings. He and his older brother Gustav Schlichting completed three years of practical training as a bricklayer, during which they took theoretical lessons at the building trade school in Eckernförde . Magnus Schlichting then worked in Hamburg , Kassel and Berlin . Incidentally, his brother Gustav stayed in Berlin and later founded the Schulz & Schlichting architectural office there with the architect Alfred Schulz . Magnus Schlichting then worked in Kiel under the building inspector Krüger. In 1877 he worked on the expansion of the march railway in Glückstadt . In 1880 he successfully applied for the position of city architect in Neumünster . The Holstenstrasse was laid out below him. In addition to several private houses, he was responsible for the construction of the newspaper building for the Holsteinischer Couriers . During this time he also took on architectural contracts in Marne , Hohenwestedt , Rendsburg and Tönning . 1898–1900 the town hall in Neumünster was built according to his plans. Until the beginning of the 20th century, Magnus Schlichting worked as a city architect in Neumünster.

In the years 1901–1903, Schlichting's first architectural design was realized in Flensburg, namely the Flensburg lodge house in Nordergraben 23. Schlichting himself was a lodge brother. He moved to Flensburg. When Nikolaistraße was laid out in Flensburg in 1904 as a road connection to Holm , the southern facade of the Holm 27 residential and commercial building, built in 1880, was also given a decorative design. Said design was carried out by Magnus Schlichting, who was based on the existing facade to the spar. At the same time, the neighboring residential and commercial building, Nikolaistraße 3, was built according to a design by Magnus Schlichting. In the years 1904/05, the four-story residential and commercial building Holm 53 was also built according to Schlichting's plans. In 1906 Schlichting redesigned the entrance to the commercial building complex by Hans Jürgensen, Holm 1/3, in downtown Flensburg . Together with the Flensburg architect Anton Meyer, he also built the new four-story residential and commercial building Holm 38 in 1907. Another four-story residential and commercial building in Norderstrasse 27/29 was built in 1908 according to Schlichting's plans. Obviously, Schlichting always realized all of these residential and commercial buildings in downtown Flensburg with a plastered facade, which was also typical of his other building designs. Furthermore, in 1905 Schlichting expanded the structure of the Lassen Crypt, an underground crypt system in the mill cemetery of the city of Flensburg. In the architectural competition for the planned construction of the Anchark Church in Neumünster in 1909 Schlichting also submitted construction plans with which he won second place. As a result, his church building plans were not implemented. Schlichting also worked as an architect in the vicinity of Flensburg. He created various houses in Sønderborg , a bank building and two hotels in Schleswig , a country house in Grödersby an der Schlei , a pharmacy in Süderbrarup , a bank in Aabenraa , various hotels in Wyk on Föhr and beach facilities in Westerland on Sylt . His last building project, the Heinrich- und Minna-Schuldt-Stift , was only completed after his death.

Magnus Schlichting's wife apparently died before him. One of his sons, who had chosen his father's profession, died prematurely. His eldest daughter married a senior teacher named Dr. Schmidt and had at least one child. In September 1918 Schlichting fell ill with the flu , which led to a protracted illness. He died on March 27 of the following year. On Monday, March 31, 1919, Magnus Schlichting was buried in the mill cemetery. He left two daughters and two sons who also worked in the father's profession.
