The Norderstraße ( Danish Nørregade ; Low German : Norder Trat ) is a historic thoroughfare in Flensburg Old Town . The mostly cobblestone street is considered a multicultural "trendy district of Flensburg", in which, in addition to the Danish minority , left-wing alternative subculture as well as a number of restaurants with international cuisine, trendy shops and artist studios have settled. The New York travel magazine Travel + Leisure named Norderstrasse one of the 18 "craziest streets in the world" because of its shoefiti or hanging shoes .

location

The approximately 700 meter long street is the continuation of the main shopping street from Südermarkt via Holm , Große Straße and Nordermarkt to the north. It begins not far from Nordermarkt from Marienstraße and runs over the intersection of Neue Straße / Toosbüystraße to the city's landmark, the Nordertor , and parallel to the ship bridge at Flensburg harbor . Several smaller side streets and alleys lead from Norderstraße, including the picturesque Oluf-Samson-Gang , the Herrenstall and the Norderfischerstraße as well as the Marienberg up the Marientreppe and the Schloßstraße towards the harbor . The Flensburg tram ran through Norderstrasse until 1973 .

Building stock

Health house (No. 58-60)

In contrast to Holm and Große Straße, the building stock is inconsistent and modest. Two-storey gable and eaves houses make Norderstrasse look like a small town. Nevertheless, the buildings erected in the late 19th and early 20th centuries give the street a big-city look. In the monument topography of 2001 by Lutz Wilde, large buildings from recent times are perceived as disturbing for the otherwise “intact structure”, including the health department from 1976/1977 (number 58–60) and the extension of the Danish Central Library from 1985/1986.

Ramsharde

The core of the settlement around Norderstrasse was called Ramsharde in the Middle Ages and was located outside the city walls . A subsequent extension of Norderstraße to the north took place at the same time as the north gate was relocated around 1595, when it was moved from its old location at numbers 122 and 147 to its current location. In contrast to the times of the Ramsharde, the "settlement under the castle", today's Norderstrasse is longer than originally.

Street naming

The Norderstraße was originally part of the Herscopstrate ( High German : Herrschaftsstraße - in the sense of: "Straße des Landesherren"), the main street of Flensburg that began north of the Südermarkt and reached to the Nordertor. Towards the middle of the 19th century, the Herscopstrate was divided into the individual streets that still exist today: Holm, Große Straße and Norderstraße. The name "Norderstraße" gradually established itself after the 1845 census. With the numbering of the houses in 1881, the name finally found official confirmation.

Fate of the Sinti

Until the houses at Norderstrasse 104 were demolished in 1935, the Flensburg Sinti families lived there in a building complex from the 17th century. After new buildings replaced the old houses, 50 Flensburg Sintis were first relocated to the St. Pauli camp on Valentinerallee and later deported via Hamburg to Poland to labor and extermination camps. A memorial plaque inaugurated in August 2008 on the house at Norderstrasse 104 commemorates the fate of the Weiß family.

Roxy

At Norderstraße 45 there was a restaurant with a hall in a former three-story house from the late 19th century from around 1880. The owners operated a cinema on the property from 1929. In 1984 Wolfram Kalinna bought the Roxy with the concert hall on the upper floor, where up to 1800 (afterwards up to 700) guests attended concerts by, for example, Joe Cocker , Chris de Burgh , Herman van Veen , Karat , the Puhdys , Geier Sturzflug or Nena until 1991 visited. In the 1980s and 1990s, the Roxy Music Hall , which was mainly used as a disco, played rock , wave , heavy metal and Neue Deutsche Welle . In the early 1990s, Kalinna converted the two small cinemas into pubs. The Casablanca with 50 seats and the Roxy Intim (55 seats) - where porn films were shown until January 1992 - the station for the rock and hard rock scene and the understation for the heavy metal scene. On October 24, 2002 the Roxy closed with a concert by the Hessian band Disbelief . Subsequent changes to the Alte Post and the Schiffbrücke were short-lived.

After the demolition in 2008 there was a vacant lot here, which was later closed in the back yard by a four-storey new building with 17 apartments. They moved in in October 2014. The Roxy Concerts , which opened on March 26, 2004 in Mergenthalerstraße, continues the tradition of the name “Roxy” .

Since 2005, worn out shoes have been hanging on wire ropes four meters across the street as a work of art of the subculture ( Shoefiti ). The art object - over 300 dangling shoes by May 2011 - is an unofficial symbol of Flensburg. The “hanging shoes” are taken from city tours and have become a popular photo opportunity for tourists. In August 2014, however, one of the wire ropes broke for the second time. In October 2014, the New York travel magazine Travel + Leisure (6.6 million readers) declared Norderstrasse to be one of the 18 "strangest" or "craziest streets in the world" because of its hanging shoes.
