Herman van Veen
Hermannus "Herman" Jantinus van Veen (born March 14, 1945 in Utrecht , Netherlands ) is a Dutch singer-songwriter , violinist , writer , clown and actor . In Germany he became known among other things with the song I have a tender feeling and as the spiritual father of the cartoon duck Alfred Jodocus Kwak .
Life
As the son of a typesetter and a housewife, Herman van Veen attended a Montessori school in Utrecht and received violin and singing lessons when he was eight.
Van Veen graduated from the Utrecht Conservatory (subjects: violin , singing, music education ). There he met the pianist Erik van der Wurff in 1961 . In 1965 van Veen appeared for the first time with a solo program. With van der Wurff, he founded the cabaret group Cabaret Chantant Harlekijn . In 1967 they had their first appearances, which were immediately received positively by the Dutch theater critics. The first recordings and television appearances followed quickly. Van Veen and van der Wurff worked together regularly until van der Wurff's death on September 22, 2014. In the early 1970s, the Dutch guitarist Harry Sacksioni was one of van Veen's accompanists.
Herman van Veen established himself as a cabaret artist, entertainer and songwriter. In 1968 he founded his production company Harlekijn, which still exists today .
Career in German-speaking countries
In 1972, Herman van Veen was discovered for the German audience by Alfred Biolek and Thomas Woitkewitsch . Woitkewitsch translated the Dutch songs into German. Van Veen's first German-language album was released in 1973 and was called Ich hab 'ein Tender Emotion . Since then he has released numerous other German albums.
On November 13, 1977 in the ARD , the first episode of the six-part series The Adventures of Herman van Veen (original title: De avonturen van Wonderlijke Herman van Veen ) broadcast. The focus was on Herman van Veen himself, his then wife Marlous Fluitsma and several musicians, including Erik van der Wurff, Harry Sacksioni, the flautist Martijn Alsters and the tuba player Hans Koppes. They live together in a windmill and experience adventures with and in images that van Veen can bring to life.
In 1980 the German-language edition of the culture magazine Harlekijn appeared for the first time , of which van Veen was the editor. The circulation was initially 80,000 copies. By January 1984, eleven issues appeared at irregular intervals.
In 1987 van Veen met the musician and lyricist Heinz Rudolf Kunze . With the long-playing record / CD Blaue Flecken , which was released in 1989, a series of albums began on which Kunze contributed the majority of the texts and also appeared as a translator.
Worldwide career
At the end of the 1980s, van Veen created the animated series Alfred J. Kwak , based on his music fable The Ente Kwak , which won several awards. In 1999 the artist had a “House of Alfred J. Kwak” built not far from the Dutch-German border in Veenpark Barger Compascuum .
Herman van Veen has published almost 140 sound carriers (long-playing records, CD and DVD ), over 60 books and a whole series of screenplays in the more than 40 years of his creative career . He was accompanied by various musicians at his numerous concerts. The spectrum ranged from an accompanying musician to a symphony orchestra.
In 2006 van Veen staged the Visualized Linzer Klangwolke , which takes place every year in Linz on the Danube . The title of the visualized Klangwolke 2006 was Ente gut alles gut .
On the occasion of the Varus year 2009 in Detmold, Herman van Veen staged the musical Op een dag in september (One day in September). The premiere of the piece took place on August 22, 2009 on the Waldbühne at Detmold's Hermannsdenkmal.
family
Herman van Veen was married to Marijke Hoffman and Marlous Fluitsma and has four children, one of whom is a daughter, Babette van Veen , an actress. Today he is married to the dancer Gaëtane Bouchez and lives in the municipality of Soest near Utrecht .
Social engagement and politics
In 1999 he was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for his contribution to German-Dutch understanding .
Van Veen is involved in several organizations, some of which he founded himself, for the rights of children and is a UNICEF ambassador. In 2005 the Euriade Foundation awarded him the Martin Buber plaque, which is awarded annually for special services to humanity.
On November 7, 2009, an open letter from Van Veens and Edith Leerkes was published , in which they expressed fear that the Dutch Partij voor de Vrijheid (PVV) could develop in the direction of the Nationaal-Socialistische Bewegungsing (which had collaborated with Hitler) . As a result, he was threatened and only appeared with bodyguards.
