The Klangwolke consists of three events of open-air concerts of classical and modern music, some of which are supplemented by visualizations :

  • The prelude is the visualized cloud of sound in the dark of the evening: modern music, mostly commissioned works , is accompanied by fireworks, lasers, video projections, ships, cranes, balloons, etc. The visualized cloud of sound is the biggest crowd puller with around 100,000 spectators and listeners. While this format initially placed the accompaniment of music through visual elements in the foreground, theatrical elements were later introduced, which in more recent times have moved into the background in favor of the performance of fireworks.
  • The classic sound cloud , which is also the opening concert of the Bruckner Festival , takes place without visualization.
  • The children's sound cloud, an afternoon event in daylight, has been telling musical stories for younger listeners since 1998.

On September 18, 1979, Anton Bruckner's Eighth Symphony was the first to put a cloud of sound over Linz, opening the Ars Electronica , the festival for art, technology and society. The Munich composer Walter Haupt was responsible for the artistic conception and direction. At that time the music came from a previously produced studio tape, while it has been broadcast live from the Brucknerhaus since 1980 . In contrast to later, not only the Danube Park was sounded, but several locations in the urban area of Linz (Pöstlingberg, Freinberg, Auhof and Hummelhof).

The Linz Klangwolken are organized by the Brucknerhaus Linz (initially in cooperation with ORF ) and are part of the International Bruckner Festival Linz . Admission to the Visualized Sound Cloud and the Children's Sound Cloud is free.
As a further development of the program, the New Year's Eve fireworks 2008 for the opening of the cultural capital year Linz09 was staged with the specially composed rocket symphony.

From 2013–2015 voestalpine was the main sponsor and they therefore bore the name voestalpine Klangwolken . In 2016, Sparkasse Oberösterreich signed a sponsorship contract for 3 years with the option of an extension. Together with LINZ AG , it will remain the main sponsor of the three Klangwolken in 2020.
