Thomas Mandel

Thomas Mandel (* 1965 in Wels , Upper Austria ) is an Austrian composer.

Life

Thomas Mandel completed the music high school in Linz and, at the same time, a conservatory training with piano (A. Voigt) and recorder (J. Mastnak). He received his concert diploma and high school diploma in 1985 with distinction.

He studied saxophone (classical and jazz , O. Vrhovnik and Wolfgang Puschnig ) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna . He graduated with distinction in 1989. From then on, Mandel was a freelance artist with engagements with the orchestra of the United Stages Vienna , the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the Nouvelle Cousin Electric Bigband. Mandel was a member of the founding line-up of the Vienna Saxophone Quartet, orchestra leader of the Blue Chip Orchestra, MtW - cello and sax. As a jazz saxophonist, he produced several CDs with his own compositions with Detomaso, TOMA and MtW. There were also tours in Europe.

This was followed by a study of composition at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz with G. Waldek. The artistic diploma was added in 2005 and he graduated in 2006 with the Master of Arts with distinction.

Mandel mainly creates compositions for orchestral ensembles in a personal style between classical and jazz. He also composes commissioned works for Energie AG Oberösterreich , the Brucknerntage St. Florian, the Landestheater Linz , the Bruckner Festival Linz and Linz as the European Capital of Culture .

  • 2006: Phönix for five percussionists, three brass instruments and string quartet
  • 2007: Phoenix Finale , first performance in November at the 1st Upper Austrian Horn Festival
  • 2007: Ances Vantgardes for clarinet, bass clarinet and cello. First performance in October at the Konzerthaus Vienna.
  • 2007: Bruckner's 5th Symphony - an improvisation , composition for eleven instrumental soloists. First performance in August in St. Florian on the occasion of the Bruckner Days St. Florian.
  • 2007: Reminiscencia en manzanilla , world premiere in April at the Brucknerhaus Linz
  • 2008: Arrangement of the musical Sweeney Todd for the Linz State Theater
  • 2009: Bruckner's VII Symphony - A Translation , world premiere in August in St. Florian on the occasion of the Bruckner Days in St. Florian.
