The Energie AG Upper Austria (formerly Upper Austrian Kraftwerke AG , shortly OKA ) is a regional energy supply and infrastructure companies. With its subsidiaries and holdings, the group is active in the fields of energy, i.e. electricity, natural gas and heat, as well as in the areas of waste disposal and water. Through constant expansion, Energie AG was active in ten countries in Central and Eastern Europe (Austria, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Slovenia) until mid-2013. After the sale of the Eastern European activities of the AVE waste disposal group, the company is again focusing on the core Austrian market.

Since September 2008, the group and all departments have been located in the Power Tower near Linz Central Station.

history

Share over 10 schillings in Oberösterr. Wasserkraft- und Elektrizitäts-AG of June 4, 1926

The beginning of the planning of a steam center in St. Wolfgang with 25 HP (18 kW) in 1892 marked the birth of the first public power supply in the Salzkammergut. Ten years later, the first large hydropower plant in Upper Austria, the Traunfall power plant , was built by Stern & Hafferl . In 1905 the Aktiengesellschaft Elektrizitätswerke Stern & Hafferl AG was founded . Four years later, the Upper Austrian Parliament decided that the state should participate in EW Stern & Hafferl AG. The end of the First World War in 1918 and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy resulted in the loss of large parts of Austria's territory and a complete reorganization of the energy supply. The Oberösterreichische Wasserkraft Ges.mbH was founded , which was converted into the Oberösterreichische Wasserkraft- und Elektrizitäts-AG (OWEAG) just two years later . In 1924 construction began on Austria's first 110 kV line from the Partenstein storage power plant to Linz / Wegscheid and Steyr. In 1929 OWEAG and EW Stern & Hafferl AG merged to form Österreichische Kraftwerke AG (ÖKA). The new company owned 12 hydropower plants and two coal-fired power plants with a total output of 85 MW and 3250 kilometers of power lines. In 1941 the ÖKA was renamed Kraftwerke Oberdonau AG (KOA). In 1945 there was a sharp decline in electricity consumption at the end of the war. Emergency measures at the ÖKA after severe war damage to the facilities had become necessary. The KOA was renamed ÖKA. With the Second Nationalization Act in 1947, the OKA became the regional company for Upper Austria. The name changed to Oberösterreichische Kraftwerke AG (OKA).

Development after the Second World War

In 1964 the new office building of the general management in the Böhmerwaldstraße in Linz was completed. Construction of the Riedersbach power plant began three years later. This represented the largest investment in the history of OKA. With its participation in Welser Abfallverwertungsgesellschaft mbH (WAV), OKA entered the field of waste disposal in 1989. In the same year, OKA opened the solar power plant on the Loser and generated green electricity for the first time. In 1991 the waste, recycling and disposal company (AVE) was founded. In 1996, building and living with the sun was presented to a broad public in the model house House of the Future . In 1999 OKA became Energie AG Oberösterreich after a reorganization .

Development from the year 2000

From 2000 the company increasingly entered the fields of waste disposal and water management. In 2001, the liberalization of the electricity market in Austria presented the company with a new challenge. In 2004, Wärme Oberösterreich GmbH was founded to bundle all of the group's district heating activities, and in the following year the decision to build the 400 MW gas and steam power plant in Timelkam was made. In 2006, Energie AG became Upper Austria's largest infrastructure group. The business fields of energy (electricity, heat and gas), disposal and water became the main pillars of the company. The market areas were now in Austria, southern Germany, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the neighboring Central European countries. In 2008 the new corporate headquarters, the Power Tower in Böhmerwaldstrasse in Linz, could be moved into. In the same year, the 400 MW gas and steam power plant in Timelkam went into operation. With the market entry in Italy (waste disposal) and Slovenia (water) in 2009, the group continued to grow. In 2011 the Supervisory Board of Energie AG Oberösterreich appointed Andreas Kolar as the new CFO on January 1, 2012. In 2013 the waste disposal division's Eastern European activities were sold. In 2015, the implementation of the Power Strategy 2020 began: full integration of Upper Austria. Ferngas AG . On February 28, 2017, Leopold Windtner left the company as General Director and Chief Executive Officer. The previous Chief Technology Officer, Werner Steinecker, was appointed as his successor, and Stefan Stallinger as his successor .

Company profile

Shareholders

The company was 100% owned by the Province of Upper Austria until 2002. 25% plus one share was sold to its member companies when they joined Energie Allianz. In 2006, Energie AG withdrew from Energie Allianz - as the majority owner, the state had to buy back the shares. The Linz AG biehielt her shares and was henceforth holds a 6.25% stake in Energie AG. 93.75% were again owned by the Province of Upper Austria.

The repurchased block of shares was subsequently up for sale. Negotiations with TIWAG followed, but did not lead to any result. The end of the negotiations was clear in spring 2007. On July 5, 2007, the Upper Austrian state parliament decided by a majority of votes to sell part of Energie AG (100% - 6.25% of Linz AG - 51% of the minimum public sector stake in the constitution = 42.75%) via an IPO . The decision was followed by a massive campaign by the SPÖ Upper Austria with its chairman Erich Haider (who was also deputy chairman of the supervisory board of Energie AG) against the IPO.

At the beginning of December, the SPÖ was able to present the necessary signatures for the initiation of a referendum in spring 2008. However, there was no longer a public survey because Governor Josef Pühringer unexpectedly stopped the IPO on January 9, 2008. Instead of going public, he presented “Plan B”, which envisaged a core group of shareholders from Upper Austria with banks, insurance companies and leading companies in the state, as well as employees and strategic partners as shareholders. This plan was implemented in July 2008.

Power plants

Energie AG operates 74 power plants (hydropower plants, thermal power plants and recycling plants, large photovoltaic power plants and decentralized photovoltaic citizen power plants, wind power plants) in Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria and Lower Austria. This includes 30 mostly smaller hydropower plants, 26 of which are run-of-river power plants on the Traun, Steyr and other rivers, as well as nine storage power plants. In total, these power plants produce 1,100 GWh per year, which corresponds to 11 percent of Upper Austrian electricity consumption. The large Danube power plants in Upper Austria are not operated by Energie AG, but by Verbund . The power plants on Enns and Steyr are partly operated by Ennskraftwerke AG , which is owned equally by Energie AG Oberösterreich and Verbund .

In addition, the company operates two large thermal power plant locations, in Timelkam and Riedersbach , and several waste incineration plants in Wels and Lenzing . In the spring of 2013, it was decided to phase out coal-fired power generation at the Riedersbach site by 2016 because it can no longer be operated economically due to the low income from the electricity price and high transport costs for coal. The last ton of hard coal was burned in the Riedersbach II power plant block on March 23, 2016. Furthermore, power plants are operated with energy generation from photovoltaics and biomass. In the 2014/2015 financial year, the entry into electricity production from wind energy took place through the acquisition of wind farms in eastern Lower Austria and a share in the Munderfing wind farm.

In total, Energie AG produced around 3.1 TWh per year in the 2014/2015 financial year, with which the company produced 35% of the electricity sold to end customers.
