history

The construction of the Hermann-Göring-Werke  (HGW) Ternberg , Rosenau and Garsten was promoted during the Nazi era . On August 14, 1939, the Lower Enns building project was declared "preferred hydraulic engineering". However, after the start of the war in April 1940, the plans were changed in favor of the planned Blitzkrieg and all work that would require a longer period of time was discontinued. After months of disputes in which both Hermann Göring and Reich Minister Todt were involved, concrete construction work on the Ternberg hydropower plant finally began on October 10, 1941. The water law permit was granted on March 9, 1942. With a decision of November 14, 1942, the Rafting features. According to information from VÖEST , which in 1945 also owned the construction site of the Ternberg power plant as the legal successor to HGW, 80% of the necessary construction work at the Ternberg power plant had been completed by the end of the war. The Enns power plants were built from May 1942 to September 1944 in a satellite camp of Mauthausen concentration camp in Nazi forced labor by numerous foreign male and female civil workers , prisoners of war, concentration camp prisoners , Austrian and Hungarian Jews , prisoners from labor education camps and Austrian Sinti and Roma .

Due to the turmoil of the war, most of the power plants only went into operation after the war , when the Enns formed the border between the American and Soviet occupation zones. A further expansion phase followed from the 1960s.

Power plants

Ennskraft operates a total of fourteen locations, twelve of them on the Enns and two on the Steyr . It uses the water supply in a catchment area of 6080 km². The average annual total generation is around 1900  GWh , which corresponds to an average output of 215 MW and the needs of around 500,000 households.

Surge operation

The power plant chain is operated in surge mode, i. This means that the accumulated electricity production on weekdays between 6:00 and 23:00 is around four times higher than at night. In the power stations of the upper level, the water is slightly dammed at night and increasingly drained during the day. In this way it is possible to increase electricity production during the day despite an almost even inflow of water. If necessary, bathers or water sports enthusiasts should also take this into account, as an increased current can suddenly occur.

Railway power generation

In power plants and Weyer St. Pantaleon current for each one of the two machine units traction network of ÖBB generated. The traction current output in Weyer is 18 MW, that in St. Pantaleon 25 MW.
