BW

Ternberg is a market town with 3389 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in Upper Austria in the Steyr-Land district . The responsible judicial district is Steyr .

geography

Ternberg is located in the Traunviertel . The extension is 9.5 km from north to south and 11.7 km from west to east. 51.4% of the area is forested, 39.6% is used for agriculture.

In Ternberg the Ennstal widens and the landscape changes from a mountainous to a hilly one. The distance to the next metropolitan area, in this case the city of Steyr , is 13 km.

Not far from the village is the Nixloch, a cave named after its white sinter ( Nix ).

The places Trattenbach (zip code: 4453) and Dürnbach (no zip code of their own) are secondary towns that are also included in Ternberg.

geology

From a geological point of view, Ternberg is a border community because it is located exactly on the dividing line between the rhenodanubian flysch and the northern limestone Alps . The rhenodanubian flysch zone is characterized by its gently hilly, sand-brushing low mountain range. As a result of the alpine mountain formation, the flysch zone in the south was crossed by the limestone Alps and pushed over to the Helvetic in the north . The Northern Limestone Alps shape the landscape, especially in the south of Ternberg. The highest point here is the Schoberstein at 1278 m, which, with its rugged five-part summit, serves as a perfect example of limestone. Low mountain ranges made of sandy, marly and schisty rocks adjoin his massive mountain.

The formation of the Limestone Alps took place in several sections. Beginning with the end of the Jurassic period up to the Young Tertiary, various rock coverings came into being. A distinction is made here between the three large ceiling systems of the Bajuvarian, Tyrolean and Juvavian ceilings. Ternberg is eponymous for part of the Bajuvarischen ceilings, which have a more or less intensive internal fold structure. The so-called "Ternberger ceiling" is characterized by the occurrence of the Reiflinger limestone and the Wetterstein limestone.

The third determining element in addition to fire and earth is water in Ternberg. The Enns, a border river, transport route or landscape-forming element of the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen region has always been an integral part of the Ternberg townscape. There is a widespread valley floor throughout the Ennstal. This was deepened in the large interglacial by a very strong deep erosion of the Enns, which carved the valley up to about today's level. During this period there were still small movements in the area of the Northern Limestone Alps, which manifested themselves in a sliding of these onto the flysch zone. The Enns laid gravel terraces, which are divided into high terrace and low terrace . From Ternberg onwards, the terraces are divided into three parts: two low terraces and one high terrace.

history

Ternberg found its way into historical processes particularly through its position on the Enns River. As a border river between east and west, the Enns fulfilled an important task. In 791, the Frankish army under Charlemagne moved against the Avars and camped at the Limes Certus (the Enns was then a contractually secured border between Franconia and Avars) to fast and pray for three days. Charlemagne presumably did not camp in Ternberg, but the places on the Enns, including Ternberg, were firmly integrated into the geo-strategic importance of the border river for centuries. Originally located in the eastern part of the Duchy of Bavaria , the place belonged to the Duchy of Austria since the 12th century.

Favored by the presence of the Eisenstrasse , cutlers settled on the banks of the Trattenbach very early on. The " Trattenbacher Taschenfeitel " is still produced there today . The largest pocket knife in the world , which is set up at the entrance to the Trattenbach valley, is a very big attraction . A guild of Feitel producers has existed since 1680 (confirmed by Leopold I in 1682). Until before the First World War, there were factories with hydro-powered hammers in operation. Today you can visit the historical production facilities on a guided 1.5 km hike in the " Museumsdorf Trattenbach " and make your own feitel. The tradition of Feitel production has been an intangible UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015 .

The church of Ternberg is first mentioned in a document around 1100, as the property of the Garsten monastery . A church or a chapel was certainly built earlier. Ternberg is first mentioned as a parish at the beginning of the 14th century - but at that time it was still part of the Garsten Monastery.

Since 1490 Ternberg has been part of the Principality of Austria ob der Enns .

Reformation , peasant wars , Turkish invasions did not leave the parish unaffected. Looting and destruction have hit the church again and again in the course of history.

It was not until 1789, during the reign of Emperor Joseph II , who ordered the abolition of the Garsten Monastery, that Ternberg became an independent parish.

The two choir windows with the valuable glass paintings date from the Gothic period of the 15th century . Between 1688 and 1690, Marian Rittinger, lay brother of the Garsten Abbey, created the baroque high altar of the church. The altarpiece depicting the resurrection of Christ is the work of Carl von Reslfeld.

Since 1918 the place belongs to the federal state of Upper Austria.

After the annexation of Austria to the German Reich on March 13, 1938, the place belonged to the Gau Oberdonau . From May 14, 1942 to September 18, 1944, a satellite camp of the Mauthausen concentration camp was located in Ternberg. Up to 400 prisoners were deployed here to build the Enns power station and to build roads and bridges.

After 1945 the restoration of Upper Austria took place.
