The world record holder Trattenbach

The world record Taschenfeitel is the oversized sculpture of a typical regional " Trattenbacher Taschenfeitel " in Trattenbach in the Upper Austrian district of Steyr-Land . In the Guinness Book of Records the Trattenbacher Riesenfeitel is listed as the largest pocket knife in the world.

Description and background

It is a true-to-scale replica of a pocket knife called a pocket knife , which has been traditionally handcrafted in the Trattenbachtal since the 15th century by the local Feitel - maker families. The traditional artisanal production of knives by many generations of cutlers and turners , which was added to the list of the intangible cultural heritage of Austria in September 2015 , had to be discontinued and was replaced by industrial production methods. As a reminder of the traditional manufacturing technology, the world's largest pocket knife was erected in 1985 at the confluence of the Trattenbach and the Enns .

Back and surroundings

The sculpture, visible from afar, is supported by two concrete plinths on a well-tended meadow surrounded by a low wooden fence. The length of the knife blade is 5.80 m, the handle is 6.30 m long and the whole sculpture weighs 2,040 kg. The great Feitel was made from wood and metal as a joint effort by various Trattenbach associations and organizations, including the volunteer fire brigade ; Like normal pocket knives, it is embossed on the handle and the blade. The only visual difference from the original is that the wooden handle has a metal cover on the top to protect it from the elements. Below the apex of the sculpture there is a small plaque with explanations on another concrete base.

In the immediate vicinity of the world record Taschenfeitel, the museum village Trattenbach - Im Tal der Feitelmacher was founded on the occasion of the Upper Austrian State Exhibition in 1998 with the title Land der Hämmer - Heimat Eisenwurzen , in which the individual work steps of traditional Feitel production are illustrated at several original locations and in a museum become.

In the more than thirty years of its existence, the world record Taschenfeitel has developed into a sight of the municipality of Ternberg and the landmark of the museum village. It is a popular photo opportunity for tourists who want to visit the museum village or hike through the Trattenbach valley.
