Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition 1998
The Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition in 1998 took place at 26 locations in the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen region under the theme Land der Hämmer - Heimat Eisenwurzen . It was the first decentralized national exhibition in Central Europe. In the exhibition, aspects of the religious , economic , cultural and social development of the culturally and historically significant landscape in the southeast of Upper Austria were illustrated in various projects . The central exhibition took place in Weyer in a baroque iron and provisions store, the Innerberger Stadel . By strengthening the regional identity, the state exhibition provided significant impetus for the region’s tourism development .
Regional context
The term Eisenwurzen originally came from the iron ore mining around the Styrian Erzberg . Today, Eisenwurzen is a geographical area in Upper Austria, Styria and Lower Austria, in which a characteristic commercial and industrial landscape has developed based on the mining of iron ores and their smelting . To the north of the ore mountain, the mining and processing of ores concentrated in the so-called Innerberger Revier , on the rivers of Ybbs , Enns and Erlauf with the economic centers of Steyr and Waidhofen . The ores were processed in Vordernberg and Leoben south of the Erzberg . In the first half of the 16th century, around 12,000 tons of iron ore - around 10-14% of the total iron ore production in Europe - were extracted in this area. As early as the 18th century, the importance of these ore districts began to decline due to increasing competition in Europe. After the First World War , only a few locations and small ironworks were able to hold their own on the market. At the end of the 20th century, the tourist potential of the cultural and industrial region began to be increasingly recognized and implemented as various iron road projects.
Exhibition concept and exhibition locations
As part of the Upper Austrian Provincial Exhibition in 1998, 30 projects on the subject of Eisenwurzen were presented at 26 different locations . The leading exhibition Land der Hämmer - Heimat Eisenwurzen took place in Weyer in the Innerberger Stadel. Here a comprehensive overview of the basics of the iron industry, the geology of the region, the forest and energy industry as well as the beginnings of ore extraction and smelting, the economic boom and prosperity in the Middle Ages and the decline of the industry was given. The development of the region as an art and cultural landscape as well as the representation of the everyday life of the people in this region take up a large part of the exhibition .
