history

The Freye Wallmihl after an engraving by Georg Matthäus Vischer from 1674

The Walhmull is mentioned for the first time in the fief book of King Ladislaus Posthumus as an aristocratic seat in 1456, when the brothers Moritz, Hanns and Andres were enfeoffed to Welczer. The property passed from Hanns Welzern to Hanns von Hohenegg on Kaufweg in 1485 . In the 17th century the Wallmühle was owned by the Spindlers. In 1653, Johann Paul Spindler zu Hofegg sold this electoral mill and the Spiegelhaus to Heinrich von Höchau and his wife Sophia, née Rohrbach. They sold the property in 1657 to Hanns Adam von Hoheneck zu Hagenberg zu Steinbach and his wife Susanna, née von Gera. In 1668 Leonhard Leichtmayr, the nurse of Riedau , acquired the election mill and the mirror house. Other owners were the Schmidtauer von Oberwallsee. In 1699, King Leopold I raised Christoph, Georg, Christoph and Tobias Ehrenreich to Jobst to an estate with every freedom. Jobst Christoph Schmidtauer set up a brewery here, which led to disputes with the Losensteiners on Losenstein and Gschwendt. After the death of Jobst Christoph Schmidtauer († 1701) the property came to Hanns Jörg Füger via inheritance. He was married to a sister of the widow of a Schmidtauer, Eva Maria Spindler von Hofegg. In 1741 the Wahlmühle and the brewery were acquired by Carl Franz von Auersperg , who in the meantime also owned the Losenstein and Gschwendt rulers , and incorporated into the Gschwendt rulers .

The brewery and later also the castle building were subsequently leased to brewers and finally sold. In 1767 it went to Johann Paul Krößwang and in 1792 to Johann Nepomuk Wagner. In 1902 Franz Jäger von Waldau acquired the property; the family is still the owner of the property today.

Free seat Wahlmühle then and now

After the engraving of Georg Matthew Vischer 1674 from its "Topographia Austriae superioris modernae" the "Freye Wallmihl" was a closed ensemble with a fortified ( loopholes ) acting living quarters and a second, equipped with a reset clock tower further building structure. Both are connected by a wall that also has loopholes and two gates through which you can get into the inner courtyard. In front of it there is another picket fence, which also extends around an orchard. The buildings in the square behind are obviously the utility wings. Next to it is another two-storey building with a mansard that looks grand ( Spiegelhaus ). The buildings were provided with side blocks.

The Wahlmühle is now a two-storey building, in which a brewery was last operated. The hook-shaped building is equipped with wrought-iron window baskets. The year 1699 can be seen above the entrance gate.

The house is a listed building .
