Upper Austria. Scythe forge museum in Micheldorf

The Upper Austria. Sensenschmiedemuseum is a museum of the history of technology and an open-air museum  in Micheldorf in Upper Austria . The history, working world and culture of the scythe forge are shown on the grounds of the former scythe forge on Gries .

history

The scythe smithy at Gries was one of the oldest and, for centuries, the largest of the twelve Micheldorfer scythe factories . In the 19th century, the Caspar Zeitlinger trade was considered the largest and most important scythe manufacturer in the monarchy. Most of the scythes with the Kelch house brand were exported and were known for their special quality.

On the site of the Gradnwerk, which was closed in 1966, the Upper Austria became in 1978. Scythe forge museum opened under the scientific direction of Franz C. Lipp and Kurt Holter . The location was part of the decentralized state exhibition 1998 Land der Hämmer - Heimat Eisenwurzen . The museum's exhibition was redesigned for this occasion.

The Upper Austria. Scythe forge museum was awarded the Austrian Museum Seal of Approval in 2003.

In 2015 the museum was acquired by the Society for Regional Studies and Monument Preservation of Upper Austria to ensure the continued existence of the museum. From 2016, the historic buildings are to be renovated and a new exhibition concept developed. The “Association for the Care and Preservation of the Cultural Assets of the Scythe Forge”, based in Micheldorf, remains responsible for the museum.

Four buildings of the former scythe factory have now been adapted as a museum and can be visited as part of a tour.

hammer

In the hammer building with its original interior, the 20 or so work steps required to produce a scythe can be reproduced. A small hammer can be operated electrically and thus clearly shows why most scythe smiths were literally hammer-like ( i.e. hard of hearing from the noise of the hammers).

Mansion

With its rich furnishings, the mansion documents the culture, social position and need for representation of the scythe trades. Not only the trade family lived in the manor house, the management rooms were also located here, employees were fed and servants lived here.

junk

Opposite the mansion is the “stuff” that was used for packing, storing and shipping the scythes. Today the exhibition in der Kram is devoted to topics such as the procurement of raw materials, the final production and the sale of scythes.

Soundscapes

In the Steinhuberhammer there is the exhibition "Sound Worlds", which can be visited both together with the scythe-smith museum and independently of it. With headphones you can experience an interactive, acoustic tour through the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen region at various sound stations .

Events

A “Sengsschmiedroas”, a guided hike to former Micheldorfer scythe works with musical accompaniment, is organized at irregular intervals.

The Steinhuberhammer serves as the venue for the “Mu & Gu” concert series.
